Speech milestones, by age

A parent's checklist from first words to school-ready speech: what most children do at each age, and the signs worth a closer look. Pick your child's age to see what matters now.

How old is your child?

By 18 months

First words

Most toddlers point, wave and use a handful of single words by now. Worth a check if your child:

Is not using any single words yet
Does not point, wave or hold things up to show you
Does not respond consistently to their own name
Does not follow very simple requests such as come here or give me
Babbled very little as a baby, or the babble has not turned into word-like sounds

Putting words together

Most two-year-olds use dozens of words and start joining two together. Worth a check if your child:

Uses fewer than about 50 words
Is not yet joining two words, such as more juice or daddy go
Mostly repeats what you say instead of producing their own words
Is hard for even you to understand most of the time
Has stopped using words they previously had

Short sentences

Most three-year-olds speak in short sentences and are understood by family. Worth a check if your child:

Is not using sentences of three or more words
Is understood by people outside the family less than about half the time
Is not asking simple questions
Gets visibly frustrated, or melts down, when trying to communicate
Struggles to follow two-step instructions such as get your shoes and bring them here

Conversations

Most four-year-olds hold little conversations and strangers understand most of it. Worth a check if your child:

Is still hard for strangers to understand
Leaves out many small words, so sentences sound like a telegram
Cannot tell you about something that just happened in a simple way
Struggles with many speech sounds, well beyond the tricky ones like r and th
Has been stuttering for more than six months, or stutters with visible strain

School ready speech

Most five-year-olds are understood nearly all the time and can tell a simple story. Worth a check if your child:

Is not understood by others most of the time
Cannot retell a simple story or event in order
Uses noticeably immature grammar compared to friends the same age
Struggles to follow instructions with several steps
Avoids speaking in groups or with less familiar people because talking is hard

What these signs are not

Children reach language milestones across a wide range, and a slightly late start often resolves on its own. Growing up with two or more languages, which is normal life in Dubai, does not cause speech delay: count your child's words across all their languages, and expect some healthy mixing.

A few sounds are simply late by design. Sounds like r and th can take until age six or seven, and that on its own is not a concern.

When to consider an assessment

If several signs in your child's age group ring true, or your gut says something is off, you do not need to wait and see. Early support works, and no one ever regretted checking early.

Common questions

The essentials, in plain terms.

My child is a late talker. Should I worry?

Not necessarily, children reach milestones across a wide range. But early support works well, and if several signs for your child's age ring true, a speech and language assessment gives you clarity.

Does growing up bilingual cause speech delay?

No. Learning two or more languages does not cause a speech or language delay. Count your child's words across all their languages, and expect some healthy mixing.
